Xiomy's Book Tales

By Xiomy, April 8th 2020

From avid reader to newfound story writer, Xiomy tells all.

book, pen, open

Reading for me has always been an escapism, to immerse myself in fantasy worlds where I can dream about riding dragons or giant phoenixes, to root for characters in dire circumstances, or swoon over morally grey characters. To feel connected to them, to laugh at their sassy remarks and shed tears for them. Along the way, I’ve noticed those characters become embossed in my heart, like real people I had bonded with.

The characters I read about became believable to me.

Taking it a step further, I conjured these characters into lifelike scenarios, asking how they might handle themselves in a given situation. Better yet, to roleplay being a detective finding a cursed object or discovering who ate the last muffin, maybe even being a pilot in space tracking down mysterious objects that will terraform a planet.

To me, reading was about drifting into other realities and forgetting about adulthood.

I hope that one day my own writing allows readers to fall in love with my characters and to remain interested in their journeys, and to perhaps imagine venturing alongside them. I wish for my characters to feel tangible to others, conveying some important themes mimicking our world nowadays, and in some cases, to allow readers to connect culturally. The dream is for my prose to play on the senses by letting the reader imagine the full world.

I remember writing my first fantasy story at university and having a professor tell me that she did not enjoy my story because it was too scary for her. Fast forward a couple of years, and I noticed that her words were my breaking point, and so, I learned that storytelling has different aspects to it and what might be amazing for one person will not be for another.

By no means should that be the only driving force to hinder ones writing experience.

Now, knowing this, it makes me content with the story I am currently working on. I’ve begun an adult fantasy where human-magicians known as Guardians must save the world from a prophesied foretelling of the destruction of the human world committed by Night Creatures.

What are Night Creatures?

Think of the vilest vampires, wickedest witches, most grotesque monsters, horribly savage werewolves, and other supernatural beings. There are also the supreme beings known as Watchers who are protectors over All Worlds.

Being able to outline this story has brought me so much joy. I’ve pulled on inspiration from around the world, which has aided in expanding my world-building. Another exciting task has been creating profiles for my characters to better understand what drives them, their fears and their strengths.

It's all hard work, but satisfying in the end.
